could i get an opinion?my DM says i spend to much time making sure i have a perfect character and all the right gear and spells and generally stacking the deck in my favor,is it a bad idea to spend a lot of time on giving yourself an advantage and whatnot?

i think it can cause the dm to become annoyed and thus may end up getting you booted, but, though im all for loopholes and the like, i would say that you do your best to suck up to him, otherwise your gonna get your ass fucked.

By Tiamat's Unholy Darkness!
When dealing with smelly humanoid mortals, I often find it dishonorable to give myself any other advantage, seeing as how the flaming justice and evil that radiates from my very scales generates enough power that many the thieving foe that gazes upon my invincibility will retreat in terror!
However, you other...shudder...fleshy beings...may often see fit to use such methods as stacked decks and perfect abilities to vanquish your puny foes. I say "Yes!". Use every conceivable advantage in your utterly pathetic repertoir to come put on top. The Great Mother Tiamat frowns upon defeat and weakness.
Put yourself on top. (cone of fire!)
